About Lingo

Hi there, and welcome! I’m Katherine Barrier, and I’m a Cincinnati-based digital news producer and freelance editor and writer. Thank you for stopping by my little corner of the internet and taking the time to learn more about me and Lingo Editing & Writing Services.

WHY LINGO?

The word “lingo” holds special meaning to me. On the surface, it’s a fun word! A little deeper though, Lingo is also the name of a street here in Cincinnati, and it’s where my grandmother – my mom’s mom – grew up, so it’s also a little nod to her as well.

But beyond that: Lingo is language within a language. It connotes casual conversation among people who just get you, and when people speak your lingo, you rarely have to explain yourself. There is understanding in what you’re saying and what you mean.

And the great thing about lingo is it’s adaptive and welcomes new, diverse and inclusive language into its mix. It’s not stagnant; it grows and changes with you.

That’s what I as a writer and editor want to bring to my work through Lingo. As a writer for your brand or organization, I use my skills to effectively convey your “lingo” to your audiences. As an editor, I strengthen your voice without sacrificing what makes your “lingo” inherent to you.

ABOUT ME

I’m a storyteller at heart, whether they’re my own stories or I’m helping someone else tell theirs. My mom would read me stories until I was old enough to do it on my own, and I discovered I loved writing when I was in second grade. My teacher had the class color in a paper cat and write a short story about him or her. That was when “Rainbow Kitty” the series was born, and I’ve been writing ever since.

Fast forward, I graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in journalism and I work for Cincinnati news station Local 12-WKRC as a digital content producer. I write and edit news articles for our website, manage our social media and pitch stories for our broadcasts.

On occasion, the opportunity to write amazing headlines such as this presents itself.

I began freelancing right out of college, writing a couple articles for The Bark magazine, where I got to combine my love for dogs with my love for my hometown. My first published piece ever was for The Bark. “Good Medicine” followed the development of a center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where children staying there could have their pets come visit. I later wrote another story for The Bark profiling a dog park in one of Cincinnati’s newly renovated parks at the time.

I was also a regular contributor for Cincinnati Refined, a former lifestyle website featuring everything good and wonderful about the Queen City. I’ve written about a speakeasy bar with a secret entrance, a mother-daughter duo serving up cakes in jars and even a haunted bed & breakfast

Currently, as a freelancer, I work as a copy editor with PatientPop, a marketing company that provides website content for medical practices. I’m also the content coordinator for Madeira Neighbors, a community magazine here in Cincinnati. Every month I interview a family in the neighborhood and write a feature about them. I also organize the event calendar, review and coordinate resident-submitted content and proofread and edit the magazine before it heads off to the printers.

I love profiling wonderful families like the Strattons for Madeira Neighbors.

Outside work, I love spending time with my fur-daughter, Daisy, who is also Lingo Editing & Writing Services’ official publishing assistant. We love taking walks together and hanging out in our yard. I’ll throw a ball for her and she’ll run off with it and refuse to give it back! I also like filming her antics and turning them into cute Instagram Reels.

Here’s my publishing assistant “assisting.”

Because I love animals, I also volunteer with Ohio Alleycat Resource (OAR) where I spend my shifts being ordered about by the demanding but adorable residents.

So demanding!

I love a good hike, kayaking, and biking when the weather is nice. And I love to travel and explore new places. Fun fact about me: One thing I love doing when visiting a new city is to take a ghost tour. I think the best way to get to know a place is through its ghost stories. I’ve got some fun ones about the Queen City I can tell you too.

I got to visit Ireland in 2019 and can’t wait to go back. The Cliffs of Moher are even more beautiful in person.

Reading is also a must for me. I’ve got my Goodreads linked here on the right-hand side of the page, so if you ever see me reading a book that you love or want to talk about, feel free to reach out to me! Also, I’m always open to good book recs. I love to laugh, so bonus points if they’re funny. The same goes for TV. I’ve always got something streaming.

So now that you know a little bit about me, feel free to pop over to my services page! It’s a rough guide of what I offer, but I’m always willing to work with you to customize services to best fit your needs.

I’m always looking to jump in on new opportunities, so if you’ve got a writing or editing project or job and you think I would be a good fit, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. You can shoot me an email at katherine@katherinebarrier.com!
